Brașov

Nestled in the Southern Carpathian mountains and surrounded by dense, beautiful forests, Brașov is undoubtedly a favorite among visitors to Transylvania.

One of Transylvania’s seven walled citadels, it was donated to the Teutonic Knights in 1211 by King András of Hungary and was then later settled by the Saxons. As the Southern Carpathian Mountains form a natural, geographic border between the regions of Transylvania to the North and Older Romania to the South, Brașov was an intersection of trade routes which linked the regions of Wallachia, Modavia, and Transylvania.

As you walk down the streets of Brașov you will see architecture in Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles. It is a living tapestry of different time periods and of the different cultures that have inhabited its streets. You will see influences from times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Saxons, and the modern day Romanians who now dwell there.

It is also a city of legends. Our favorite is the legend of “Rope Street.” At 180 meters in length and 135 cm in width, it is Europe’s most narrow street. Legend has it that it was a meeting place for clandestine lovers and it is said that couples who kiss on Rope Street will never be torn apart, making Brașov a must see for lovers and friends alike!
